'The People's Songs' is a new series being broadcast on Wednesday evenings at 10.00pm on BBC Radio 2. Over the course of 50 programmes Stuart Maconie presents a social history of our nation based on a key song of the last 70 years. The second programme, first broadcast on 9 January 2013 (and available on I Player for over a year - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lpm63 ) featured 'Two Tribes: the threat of nuclear war'. It is a chilling account.
The programme narrative begins with a description of an innocent looking bungalow at Kelvedon Hatch - below which there is hidden a nuclear fall-out shelter for the government of Great Britain to decamp in the event of attack.
It was never used - thankfully.
Happy Weekend everyone!
