Essex Society for Archaeology and History - latest news during 'lockdown'

Members will have received the Summer 2020 edition of the Newsletter (NL191) over the past few days. It gives information regarding the proposed restart of activities, effective from September 2020.  The Annual General Meeting has been moved to Saturday 17 October to be held at the Albert Sloman Library at the University of Essex.

The Newsletter is now being compiled and edited by Adrian Corder-Birch.  The Society has plans to phase out the Newsletter as it takes on the Essex Journal for 2021.  Members will, in future, be contacted by email.   There is also notice of a change in management of the Society's website.

Hope you are all well. Unfortunately the wording of our notice to members has been overtaken by events. With government advice now to avoid unnecessary travel and social interaction tomorrow's visit to Miss Wilmotts garden should not go ahead. Howard/Jane do you have email adresses or phone numbers for those who have booked (I imagine there aren't that many) if so could you contact them at let them know not to attend. If not we'll just have to hope they have heard and heed the government advice. Perhaps also let the host of the event know. Thanks and sorry to bother you with this.

Dear Member,
Re: Corona virus and ESAH events and meetings

In view of the ongoing Corona virus pandemic it has been necessary to make some changes to
the ESAH programme of events. In accordance with government advice, this week’s visit
to Miss Wilmott’s garden will proceed as planned. It is an open air event, numbers will be small and
if simple precautions such as not shaking hands and maintaining a greater distance than usual from
each other risk will be minimal.

However, it has been decided to postpone both the Morant Lecture (25th April) and visit to
the Warner Textile archive (22nd May). Whilst current government advice does not require the
postponement of such events the Society has decided to take a precautionary approach. Revised dates
will be advertised in due course, for those of you who have booked but are unable to attend on the
revised dates refunds will be offered. Committee and Council meetings planned for late March and
April have also been postponed.

It is hoped that the AGM will proceed as planned on 27th June, if it has to be postponed notification
will be given, and the revised date will be 17th October.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused but hope you will understand the circumstance which have
led to these decisions. If you would like any further information or clarification please contact me or Howard Brooks (our Secretary) at essexarchaeology@hotmail.com.

Additional Event. Relocation of Thomas Stapel brass to Rochford Church. Saturday 14 July 2018

Saturday 14th July  2pm. Visit to Rochford. 

A free talk, organised by Monumental Brass Society, in conjunction with Rochford Hundred Historical Society, Rochford Town Team and Essex Society for Archaeology and History. There will be 3 speakers and the event is to celebrate the relocation of the Brass to Thomas Stapel 1371. Why not join a tour of Rochford in the morning, tours start at 10am and 12 noon. The tours are free, but donations to the guides are accepted. To book your ticket go to Bookings for Thomas Stapel and enter the password ‘stapel’. What is happening after our AGM at Hill Farm, Gestingthorpe?

Further details are announced regarding the Essex Society for Archaeology and History' Annual General Meeting on Saturday 9 June 2018.

After the formal business, Ashley Cooper, the farm owner, will offer a tour of the Hill Farm Museum, with its exhibits from geological times to the Second World War. These also includes a medieval Guildhall, an eighteenth century corn barn, rural bygones and artefacts from the Roman Villa. There will also be an opportunity visit the site of the Villa and the current archaeological excavations, where a Romano-British ritual site may have existed.

Morant Lunch: Change of Venue

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to change the venue of this years Morant Lunch. The new venue is Intimo fresco 116 High Street Maldon. The date, time and speakers remain the same.

Reconstructing Medieval Essex 

Medieval Essex was a land of rich variety, including estuaries and marshland, coastline and rivers, royal forests and ancient countryside. The landscape around us can seem like a fixed and permanent thing but it is, in fact, ever-changing, shaped by both natural and human forces. This event will bring together expert speakers to explore how the landscape of medieval Essex shaped the lives of the people who lived there, and how they in turn shaped the environment around them. ESAH/EIAG Industrial Events 2016

The next visit of industrial interest is on Wednesday 3^rd August at 10:00 to the Essex Fire Museum, Grays.

A guided tour of the museum will be followed by refreshments. The museum provides a fascinating look at the history of the Essex Fire Service through historic fire engines, firefighting equipment, uniforms and photographs. Those of you who attended the Industrial Heritage Fair last October will recall their very popular stand at the event.
