ESAH Sunday Series: Travel

From Revd. EHL Reeve's Commonplace Book of 1881.

Travel
Abraham Reeve of Hadleigh, Suffolk

He was a man “hard as iron”, as no doubt also “as true as steel”.  In the coldest weather he would crack on to his sides, and call it “wholly warm” while meaner specimens of humanity were nearly dead with the cold (e.g. returning from Bury [St Edmunds] one day with his son Edward, with icicles hanging from his wig).  His power of endurance was unbounded, and he is said to have been capable of undergoing any amount of fatigue.

On one occasion he took his two sons to London, and spurning the coach the trio rode up together – a journey of about 60 miles – ponies having been obtainable for the purpose suitable to the boys.  After a hard days riding it would not be a matter of surprise in this degenerate age if such mere boys as they were at the time should feel slightly sleepy and overcome in the evening, especially if seated after a comfortable dinner in a crowded theatre.

Market Day

In the old days when Abraham Reeve took his celebrated rides into market there were no banks in the country, and no cheques wherewith to pay off large sums in a convenient form.  Once a week therefore or at longer intervals Abraham had to take pocketsful of hard cash over with him – and (shall I say more often?) bring hard cash back.  Such was the weight, jolting upon his as he rode, would make him stiff and sore at the end of the day.

Fast horse

Let not the fame of George Tompson of Yarmouth sink into oblivion, whose favourite mare, according to the account given by himself to the Rector of Raydon [Revd. Thomas Reeve], could trot 16 miles within the hour.

Destination mistaken

Capt. Reeve once took his seat in a coach in a London yard in order to go to Leamington in Warwickshire.  He shortly found himself journeying towards Lymington in Hampshire.  The coaches started from the same yard, and he had embarked upon the wrong.  However, he was pleased with the day, the scenery was delightful, and it is said that he was induced to take a house in Lymington for the summer months.

Colchester Museum: Connections (4)

Part 4

Eric Rudsdale (1910 – 1951) grew up in Colchester becoming interested in archaeology as a youngster.  He was Assistant Curator at the Museum from 1928 to 1945, before moving to a similar post in Wisbech.  He kept a diary throughout his lifetime, hoping to emulate Pepys, which is now – for the Second World War – being published online (see http://wwar2homefront.blogspot.co.uk/  ).  (His journals are preserved at the Essex Record Office – and are an extremely interesting insight to archaeology in Colchester from the 1920s.)  Extracts from his online diaries tell of his membership and, in rather blunt terms (“which might today be considered offensive”), what he thought of the members of the Essex Archaeological Society.  (http://wwar2homefront.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=essex+archaeological+society&max-results=20&by-date=true  ).  In the extracts he speaks of the sale by auction of Dr Laver’s book collection (and at the time of publication of this item the sale 70 years ago was imminent).

He mentions P G Laver (who died in 1941) in his article in the Essex Review.  It seems he was a close friend of the Lavers – both Henry and Philip, being inspired as a schoolboy to help “Captain [Henry] Laver” measure up the Lexden Tumulus in 1924.

The Essex Archaeological Society continued to have representatives on the Museum Committee until 1974.  Local government reorganisation – which Alec Clifton Taylor lamented and ignored in his writing – removed the right of non-elected officials to be represented.  In 1986 Colchester Borough Council removed the right of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History to sit on the Museum Committee.  The Society commented that this was “a tear” having no legal recourse of appeal.

We are a registered charity with the aim of providing entertainment to these establishments.

We raise all the funds ourselves in order to keep these vital services running. The next fund raising evening we are organising will be a 1940's dance.
The 1940's Dance is part of our celebrations for Forest Gold's 10th Birthday.
It will take place on Saturday 9th February at 19.40, Epping Catholic Church Hall, Church Hill, Epping CM16 4RA

Colchester Museum: Connections (3)

Part 3

Eric Rudsdale wrote a series of articles for the Essex Review (Vol LVI Nos 221-224, 1947) commemorating the centenary of the Colchester Museum (1846-1946).  Concluded …

In 1926 a new agreement was reached between the Corporation and the Society.  “For some time it had been felt that the system of keeping distinct the separate collections … was out of date and inconvenient, and after a joint meeting of the Museum Committee and the Council of the Society it was agreed … to amalgamate the two under the title of the Colchester and Essex Museum (EAS Vol xviii, 137).  Only the Society’s Library and manuscripts were excluded from the amalgamation.”

In 1929, Holly Trees House, adjacent to the Castle, the home of the late Mr Charles Gray, which had been given to the Corporation in 1920 by Viscount Cowdray, was opened for the purpose of a “Museum of Later Antiquities, and as offices and Library of the Society”. (The Essex Society for Archaeology and History moved the Library to the University of Essex in 2000, but still has an office on site.)  “There were store-rooms and a workshop in the basement.”

The Museum also took an interest in field-work: “in the Holly Trees Field from 1927-29, and at Sheepen Farm from 1931-39”.  Major works were necessary to the Castle in the mid-1930s: the foundations needed to be secured and structure re-roofed.  The outbreak of the Second World War meant that glassware has to be removed from the cases, wrapped and stored under sandbags on the ground floor of the building.  Despite the war acquisitions continued to arrive: “the timber framing of a fifteenth century hall, formerly standing in Culver Street, was re-erected in the Castle”.  Staff at the Museum also attended the bomb damaged Little Horkesley Church to rescue its monumental brasses and wooden effigies.

Dr Philip Laver died in 1941.  “For many years after his retirement from practice in 1926 he was almost a daily visitor to the Museum and to the Essex Archaeological Society’s Library in the Holly Trees, to which he was such a generous donor. After a few hours working in the Library he would go downstairs to the workshop in the basement, and there sit in an old armchair, talking about new discoveries, or the chances of preserving some ancient house which the Town Council were anxious to destroy.”

ESAH Sunday Series: Church stories

A further selection of stories about Church in days gone by.

Announcements in Church

In old times all notices which we now read for ourselves on our Church doors were read to the congregation in Church by the parish Clerk, and many curious mistakes would be made from time to time.  On one occasion the Clerk read of a “rat, mad and singed by the inhabitants”, instead of a “rate, made and signed”.

Another Clerk gave out that there would be no service that afternoon as the minister was going ‘fishing’ in another parish.  (This of course should have read “officiating”. Ed.).

Singing in Church

The story used to be told of the Revd. Arthur Job Wallace [brother of Revd. Tom Wallace] of Braxted [Essex] that on one occasion he was more than usually disgusted with the vocal efforts of his congregation at the first hymn of an evening service at his Church, and that, when the Clerk got up to give out the second hymn according to custom, he met the invitation to harmony with this abrupt dismissal of it: “No, let us pray”.

Hadleigh Church Choir

The organist of Hadleigh [Suffolk] – and a capital musician – when asked of the family how his choir was progressing, replied with a sigh, “Some are beginning to sound A, and some are beginning to grumble B”.

The Week Ahead

Dr [Job] Wallace [D.D., Rector of Messing] seems to have been the pattern of a country gentleman of his day.  After the manner of those times [Dr Wallace died in 1793], his churchwarden would meet him immediately after Divine Service on Sunday to arrange where and at what hours the harriers should meet during the week.

ESAH Forum: The People's Songs

'The People's Songs' is a new series being broadcast on Wednesday evenings at 10.00pm on BBC Radio 2. Over the course of 50 programmes Stuart Maconie presents a social history of our nation based on a key song of the last 70 years.  The second programme, first broadcast on 9 January 2013 (and available on I Player for over a year - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lpm63 ) featured 'Two Tribes: the threat of nuclear war'.  It is a chilling account.

The programme narrative begins with a description of an innocent looking bungalow at Kelvedon Hatch - below which there is hidden a nuclear fall-out shelter for the government of Great Britain to decamp in the event of attack.

It was never used - thankfully.

Happy Weekend everyone!
