The
parish of Doddinghurst is to have a new War Memorial to remember the fallen of
the parish over the two world wars. It
is being constructed outside All Saints Church.
Caroline
Seville writes:
“We have now raised all the funds and the
monument will be in place next month – August - (the surround is already in
place) and is being dedicated by the Archdeacon of Chelmsford on Saturday,
September 6th (2014) at 4 pm. Do come if you would like to and are able.
“Laurie
Gray has done a lot of research into the names to be inscribed - ten for WW1
(as on the plaque in the church) and ten for WW2 (some in the forces and some
civilian). He has written a detailed account and we are having it made up into
a booklet, with photos. It is currently
with the printers but won't be produced until the monument has been installed,
because we would like to include photos of the memorial. We will get you a copy
to you when they are available.”
The
work supplements that carried out by the Blackmore War Memorial Research Group
in 2010 – four names from the First World War are also remembered on the War
Memorial at Blackmore – and by Ron West, a member of the Essex Society for
Archaeology and History. For more on the
fallen of the Great War visit http://www.blackmorehistory.co.uk/doddinghurstwwone.html
Caroline
adds, “Laurie has also made contact with some descendants of the fallen and
they will be invited to the ceremony.
“Many
thanks for your interest and best wishes.”
