ESAH Forum. 'The Wonderful World of Disney: Collecting Classical Antiquity'

An Essex History event, this time in Ipswich.  UCS (University Campus Suffolk) will be hosting a lecture on Tuesday 14 May 2013 beginning at 5.30pm, when the guest speaker will be Professor David Gill.  

It will be a lecture regarding John Disney of The Hyde, Ingatestone and first President of the Essex Archaeological Society. The following information is taken from the UCS website (http://www.ucs.ac.uk/About/Events/Event-details-page.aspx?id=19096 ):

"Professor David Gill will discuss the work of John Disney in this lecture. The memorable exclamation ‘Yes, wonderful things’ was uttered by Howard Carter when he peered into the tomb of Tutankhamun. The origins of modern academic archaeology in the British Isles can be traced to Dr John Disney (1779-1857). In 1850 he donated his ‘valuable collection of ancient marbles and statuary’ to the University of Cambridge for display in the Fitzwilliam Museum. The following year he offered endowments to establish the Disney Professorship of Archaeology. The gift and benefaction allow the exploration of two key themes, firstly, the formation of classical collections in the 18th and 19th centuries; and, secondly, the creation of an academic discipline that would emerge out of antiquarianism. Disney, whose family came from Lincolnshire, lived at The Hyde, near Ingatestone, Essex. The collection was formed by the republicans, Thomas Hollis and Thomas Brand Hollis. Disney also contributed to the transformation of archaeological studies in East Anglia. He was the first President of the Essex Archaeological Society and he helped to create the Chelmsford and Essex Museum."

The Essex Journal is a twice-yearly publication independent to the Essex Society for Archaeology and History.  The Autumn 2012 edition has just been issued containing the following articles:

Two articles mention the Society as sources for material.  Derek Trowler mentions W R Powell's item in Series 30 Volume 30.  Katherine Schofield introduces her topic by reference to its accession to the Essex Record Office, in 1939, and the article produced in the Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society, 'new series' Volume 22 in 1940 (a copy of which is available from our Online Bookshop.)

ESAH Forum: Colchester Castle Museum Closed During 2013

The Museum at Colchester Castle will be closed after 6 January 2013 for major redevelopment and will open once again in Easter 2014.  

The Colchester Castle Museum website says:

Constructed on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, Colchester Castle is the biggest Norman Castle in Britain – in fact, it’s the biggest ever built by the Normans anywhere in Europe.

The Castle is also one of Colchester’s most important tourist attractions. But from 7 January 2013 until spring 2014, we regret that the Castle must be TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO VISITORS for essential redevelopment.

These works will ensure the Castle remains an outstanding visitor attraction fit for the twenty-first century. More of the Castle’s historic interior will be revealed as a result of the renovation, new displays will be introduced, and the building will be made fully accessible for wheelchairs. We’re also improving the shop and the toilets; the Castle roof will be insulated, and under-floor heating will boost energy efficiency.

When it reopens in 2014, the Castle will tell the 2,000-year story of Colchester in a fresh and exciting new way.

You’ll be able to follow in the footsteps of Roman soldiers and Norman invaders, discover the story of the Witchfinder General, and learn why Queen Boudica burned Colchester to the ground. There will be a full-size burial reconstruction, audio character stories, replica objects to handle, and much more.

The site will be open to the public for a short while after the museum artefacts are removed so that the bare interior can be viewed.  The Essex Society for Archaeology and History is planning a Visit in April 2012 for its members. 

The Museum is of importance to the Essex Society for Archaeology and History because in its early years its members gave a large number of antiquities to form the main part of the collection.  In 1927 W Gurney Benham mentioned in his Guide to Colchester that "The Colchester Museum is chiefly the property of the Colchester Town Council, but partly also the Essex Archaeological Society, whose library is also housed here".

ESAH Forum: Was 2012 Britain's Greatest Year

I have to ask the question as we approach the end of the year: "Was 2012 Britain's Greatest Year?".  The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen, the Olympic and Paralympic Games were all very memorable events and if, like me, you got tickets for the Olympic Park for one of those 16 days in late July or Early August then those memories will live with you forever. These events made history.  But alas, the poor weather and perhaps the distraction of sport was not such a good year in footfall for our heritage sites. How about putting that right in 2013!  Finally, in case you wondered, the Olympic Games did not crowd out our history and heritage, as the photo taken at the Excel Centre, one of the venues, on 4 August 2012 illustrates.

Rules

Revised 14th April, 1894.

I. The Society shall be called the ESSEX ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY, and shall consist of a President, Vice-Presidents, a Council, and Members.

2. Candidates for admission must be proposed and seconded by Members and may be elected at any General or Council Meeting.

3. When considered advisable, the Council may elect as Honorary Members for one year persons who are not Subscribing Members of the Society. Honorary Members shall be entitled to all the privileges of membership during the current year of their election, and they shall be eligible for re-election.

 4. The subscription of ordinary Members shall be 10/6 per annum, payable on election, and annually in advance on the 1st of January, £5 5s 0d. may be paid as a Life Composition in lieu of the Annual Subscription.

5. The President, Vice-Presidents, and Council shall be elected annually at the Annual General Meeting of the Society. Vacancies may be filled up at any General Meeting.

 6. Any Member who has been elected to the Presidency for five successive years, shall ipso facto be ineligible for re-election to that office for a period of three years.

7. The President and Council (of whom three shall form a quorum) may elect a Secretary, Treasurer, Curators, Bankers, Auditors, and other Officers, and shall conduct the affairs of the Society.

8. Local Secretaries shall be elected annually by the Council tor such districts as the Council shall prescribe, and it shall be the duty of the Local Secretaries to promote the objects of the Society and to report to the Council discoveries in, and matters of archaeological interest connected with, their respective districts.

9. General Meetings of the Society shall be held at such times and places as the Council may determine, for the following among other purposes:--the transaction of business, reading papers, receiving communications, exhibiting antiquities, discussing subjects of archaeological interest, and making excursions.

10. The Council shall (with the permission of the authors) select such of the papers read at the Meetings of the Society and of the communications received as it thinks proper, for publication in the Transactions of the Society or otherwise. The Transactions shall also comprise reports of the Society's Meetings, and such other matters of interest as the Council shall select. The editing of this volume shall be entrusted to the Secretary or such other person as may be appointed by the Council.

11. Every Member whose subscription is not in arrear shall be entitled to one copy of such parts of the Transactions as may be issued during the current year of his membership; and the issue of such parts shall be discontinued in the case of any member whose subscriptions are more than two years in arrear.

12. No alteration in, or addition to, these Rules shall be made except by a majority of the Members present at a General Meeting, 14 days' notice of any proposed alteration or addition having been previously given to the Council.
