Biggest Storm Surge Since 1953

A low pressure system, high tides and onshore winds is the combination of weather events which cause coastal flooding.  This happened last night (Thursday 5 December) in Essex and was the biggest since the devastating night of 31 January 1953.  This time there were warnings and rest centres were opened for those evacuated.  2500 homes in the Jaywick and Mersea area were evacuated.  Water in Jaywick, Harwich, Manningtree, Mersea Island and Maldon was reported on BBC Essex at 7.00am as daylight began to break this morning.  There are no reported loss of lives so far.  Our thoughts are with those displaced, those who have run these rest centres at short notice.  History repeating itself? In terms of weather, no, in terms of lives, thankfully yes.
