On the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning there was an item noting that the British drink more wine now than ever before - the reason is because glass sizes have become bigger. It reminded me that today (14 December) 165 years ago, the
inaugural meeting of the Essex Archaeological Society was held, after which 35 members
dined at The Cups Hotel, Colchester, spending 7s. 6d. each on a pint of wine. Apart from the relatively huge expense of wine in 1852 (37.5p), it is worth noting that a pint is just over 2 large pub glasses (2 x 250ml) these days.
