Detectorists, a BBC Four comedy series, caused archaeologists to chuckle this autumn. It was about two rather hapless individuals pursuing their hobby as metal detectorists in the hope that somewhere in Essex - it looked to be near Maldon (Danebury) - was a Saxon burial on par with Sutton Hoo. One had accumulated a ring pull collection. They never lost hope in following their dream, and that is what probably made it repeat viewing. This book, 'Treasure Hunter's Handbook' is the more serious side of going out with a metal detector, combing beaches, finding Victorian rubbish dumps etc., and contains useful information as well as the legal obligations for reporting finds. Purchased in a national remainder bookshop chain.
