The Essex Society for Archaeology and History wonders whether anyone still holds the manuscript drafts of the indexes to Volumes 24 and 25 of the 'Second Series'.
The Indexes for the ‘Old Series’ and ‘New Series’ comprise two books and ten booklets, the latter being a Title Page and
Index for ‘New Series’ ('Second Series') Volumes 16 to 25.
It is possible to digitise a continuous document of the
whole set of indices from 1858 to 1960 which will be an enormous benefit to
researchers - and that is our plan.
Volumes 24 and 25 are clearly less detailed
than their predecessors, reasons for which are given below.
Volume 22 (2 parts) has 436 pages with 40
pages indexed.
Volume 23 (2 parts) has 410 pages with 35
pages indexed.
Volume 24 (1 part) has 304 pages with 19
pages indexed.
Volume 25 (3 parts) has 392 pages with 6
pages indexed.
Newsletter: Spring 1973.
“The Indices for Volumes 24 and 25 of the Transactions having been
meticulously prepared by Messrs J S Appleby and L H Gant, in great detail, have
now been passed to Dr F G Emmison for editing. Times being what they are
these Indices are far too detailed for publishing, and are being typed and
edited in Dr Emmison’s control.
“The next step will be to place the typed sheets with a printer for
Off-set litho, reproduction.”
Newsletter: Summer 1974
“These indices are now available … [and] will be supplied free of
charge to all Institutional Library members, and to Exchange Libraries.
“Other members who require these Indices should request them from the
Secretary, and a post and packing payment of 6p.”
ESAH has checked SEAX (the Essex Record Office database) to see whether there is
a remote possibility that Messrs Appleby’s and Gant’s work is archived, but
cannot see anything. I do recall anything in our own archives or in the
catalogue of our ESAH Library.
If someone has the original manuscript we would be very pleased to receive a copy.
