Reverend Philip Morant was born on 6 October 1700 in St Saviours, Jersey. He died in 1770 and is buried at Aldham, one of the many parishes he held as Rector. Morant is celebrated as the first Essex historian in print and is commemorated annually by the Essex Society for Archaeology and History at its annual Morant Lunch which, coincidentally, is being held today at Mulberry House, High Ongar.
